About That Athleisure Life

Every now and again, a new trend hits the scene that manages to combine style and comfort in the best possible way. The latest of these trends to really tickle my fancy: athleisure

It’s a little sporty, a little fancy, and a lot perfect. The combination of athletic pieces like baggy sweats & sneakers, with more luxurious fabrics, all topped off with some bling just speaks to my soul in a way that very few styles do.

These joggers from ASOS are probably among the most interesting pieces in my wardrobe right now. I mean, faux sweatshirt arms are both the strangest and best thing I’ve seen in a long time. Like, really though… they’re super weird, but I’m kind of obsessed.

Also, they are the perfect thing for rocking with a dressy, structured crop top as an unapologetic homage to the very apologetic 90s hoodie-around-the-waist style from my teens that I wore very strategically to hide my exposed belly from a society that didn’t approve of it, and that I hadn’t yet learned to just tell to fuck off.

The sweats, this gorgeous crop top, and soft jersey longline vest are the ultimate pieces for  a little fall warmth and layered style.

Paired with my beloved gold chain necklace from Ready To Stare, hoop earrings, and these sexy nude sneakers from Aldo, this look is the definition of what athleisure is all about, with the added bonus of challenging societal beauty standards as well.

Athleisure may not be for everyone, but it is definitely one of my fave fall trends! It combines all of the things my fashion loving soul likes best, with the comfort of athletic wear. These days, there are very few things I value more when it comes to how I dress, than comfort that requires no sacrifice, or limitations on style, and athleisure is definitely the business!

Long Sleeves For Fall

I love a dress with long sleeves. There aren’t as many out there as I would like, especially when it comes to dressier dresses, but when it comes to fall in Montreal, a pretty long sleeve dress is a must have!

I’m long past my days of wearing long sleeves for the sole purpose of hiding what I thought were my hideous upper arms. It’s just that it’s nice to be able to keep my arms out of the brisk fall breeze without having to cover up, which is in the case of this adorable dress from SexyPlus, an absolutely gorgeous neckline!

Its off the shoulder style and ruffle detail is flirty and fun, and I love that I can show it off while still keeping things seasonally appropriate.

The fall transition period can be a bit tricky, especially when it comes to dressing up. More often than not, it comes down to a a choice between style and comfort, but this dress is the best of both worlds!

Super chic, with its classic polka dot print, and sleeves long enough to extend no-coat-check season for at least a few more weeks— what’s not to love!? And can we talk about how it hugs my curves!!! Yassssss!!!

Paired with silver shoes and accessories, and a rhinestone clutch, this a fabulous look for atending any fall event!

I can always count on SexyPlus when I’m looking for the perfect dress, and this one does not disappoint.

Obsessed With Tess

No, I’m not a creep, I swear… It’s just that my husband and I had the pleasure of meeting up with Tess Holliday, her amazing husband Nick (who is so supportive and delightful,  by the way), and their adorbale newest wee one, Bowie, last month when they were in Montreal, and I’m still in awe of her just a little bit (okay, a lot).

Tess was in town, of course, working on her clothing line, MBLM by Tess Holliday, at the Penningtons head office which in conveniently located in my city. She had just flown out of Montreal to NYC and back again in the same day in true boss babe fashion when we grabbed our late supper, which to be honest, was hella impressive because I don’t think I would have still been standing after a crazy day like that, let alone giving blogger fan girls like me the time of day! Alas, She was incredibly gracious and we ate, and chatted about our kids, our families, and of course her clothing line!

As it turns out, this busy beauty has been working really, REALLY hard on this, and honestly, it shows! Looking at the whole line, you can really see her in it… And I don’t just mean you can see her wearing all of it (which you totally can), but if you’ve been following Tess Holliday for any amount of time, you can see how she brought all of herself into this line truly making it her own. Tess never shies away from bold fashion choices and turning up the sex appeal, and thanks to her, now Penningtons customers, and plus size women, especially in Canada (although her line is available in the US as well), who are looking for affordable pieces that that are youthful, fashion forward, and sexy, can enjoy some long needed edgier options!

One of my favourite pieces (although it’s pretty hard to choose) was this little black dress— simple at first glance, but it’s all in the details! The 3/4 sleeves, tone on tone coated trim, and studs are super cute, and my favourite part is the the sexy thigh high slit! I love showing a little leg and this dress definitely does just that.

Patent leather oxfords, a gold choker, some dangly chain earring, and a totally chic “doggy bag” (so I can tote my pretty little chihuahua girl around in style with me like the shamefully obnoxious small dog owner that I’ve become), have just the right amount of glam and attitude to compliment the dress perfectly.

Honestly, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again— I’m totally obsessed this line (and so is my thirteen-year-old daughter)!!!

It’s the breath of fresh air we so very much needed on the Canadian market where the choices for young plus size women, especially when it comes to options that are available in brick and mortar establishments, remain somewhat limited.

We needed this line, we needed Tess Holliday, and thankfully Penningtons brought to us, her bold, badass style in what has been a total game changer in Canadian plus size fashion!

The Girl Who Dates Her Own Body

I love my body. I didn’t always, but this pasty white, jiggly mass of flesh and bones that is the vessel of my consciousness, we’re cool now.

It’s a good thing too, because this bod and I, are kind of stuck with each other. We may as well get along… After all, life is a lot easier when you’re in a mutually beneficial relationship, especially when it’s the one you share with yourself!

I used to avoid taking my body out to certain places. I didn’t want to be seen in public with it. I was ashamed. This hurt my body very much. It also hurt me. I began to resent it. I wished it looked better. I wished I had a different one.

I didn’t like eating in out because I would worry that my body might not fit into the booths. I worried that people would stare at us as we ate. I rarely went to places like the pool, or the beach. I couldn’t bear the thought of people seeing my body in a bathing suit.

I wanted to love it. I wanted to be able to look at my body and like what I saw, the same way everyone on TV and in magazines seemed to be able to. I just didn’t hadn’t yet realized that the answer wasn’t that I needed to change my body, but rather, I needed to change the way I saw it.

I started looking for beauty in the parts of my body I had convinced myself weren’t beautiful. I began looking, and I mean, really looking at it in the mirror and in photographs, and changing the language I used to describe it. I started feeding it the foods it liked without worrying about their calorie count. I stopped treating my body like it deserved to be constantly punished for looking different than the way the movie stars and magazines told me it should.

Now I take my body out on dates. We go to restaurants, movies, and out for ice cream in public together. We don’t care who sees us. We’re in love.

We even go to the beach together… In a bikini… After hiding my body for all this time, it deserves to feel the warmth of the sunlight, and the caress of the beachside breeze.

We’re so in tune with each other, my body and I, that we’ve basically become one… I mean, one could argue that we always have been, but it sure didn’t feel that way for most of my life.

You see, I spent most of it telling myself how good I would look if only I had a better body, how I wished I could have somebody else’s— how much I hated it. The disassociation I made between my body and self became my reality. I separated myself from it as an act of self-preservation, and it took me all these years to get up the courage to apologize to my body for how badly I had treated it, and promise to it, that I would never let myself do that again.

So to you, I may just look like a fat girl on the beach, strutting around showing off my swim body in a floral bikini, and on the surface, you’d be right… But if you dig a little deeper, what you’ll really see, is the foundation of a newly rekindled relationship between a once very broken girl, and her body, that never was.

A big thank you to this bikini babe for these awesome shots!!! (Except for this one, which I can thank my mum for!)

A Vixen Of Coincidence

I’m a bit of a fashion chameleon. I love changing things up and incorporating elements of all the styles I love into my wardrobe. Sometimes the clothes I wear may have a bit of a gothic flair, other times they may be ultra modern or classic and timeless, but one thing is for sure, I always make sure to find a way to make it my own.

I’ve never been the kind of person to look at an article of clothing and say, I love it, but I could never wear it (except for leather pants, but not that I haven’t tried). I think this is how I’ve ended up with such a unique style, because when you never say no to trying a new piece you truly adore, what starts out as a mishmash of a personal style, quickly evolves into having a veritable personality of its own!

One of the styles I draw major inspo from, yet oddly enough, rarely utilize in actuality is pinup style. Like, I’m actually obsessed with it, believe it or not, but for some reason I have always found it a wee bit intimidating because there are so many beautiful babes out there already knocking it out of the park when it comes to 50s fashion.

I had been thinking a lot about working more retro inspired styles into my wardrobe lately, so when Voodoo Vixen happened contact me and offer me one of their gorgeous pinup style dresses, I jumped on this one like, well, myself on cake! It was like they’d been reading my mind!

The floral print is just so bright and cheerful, and I love the fact that there’s a little bit of grey incorporated into the mix. The details on it, like the fabric covered buttons and the pleats at the bust give it an authentic feel, and I honestly couldn’t help but twirl in it because I just felt so pretty!

Of course, I wanted to add my own personal touch to my look, so without overpowering the total retro fabulousness of it, I decided to go with some trendy accessories to be sure to achieve the right melange of styles. A pair of silver strappy flats from Aldo, and some colourful midi rings were the perfect accompaniment to compliment the dress while staying true to my eclectic aesthetic.

In case anyone was wondering, the bright orange umbrella just coincidentally happened (I swear) to match my outfit, but I actually think it made my look even more fun if that’s possible. It had been raining that day and there was still a fine mist in the air when I stepped out to shoot, but for pretty much the first time in my life I was actually prepared and had an umbrella stashed away in the trunk of my car for quite literally, a rainy day.

Like they always say though, everything happens for a reason. Some coincidences were just meant to be and that’s exactly how I feel about my style— born of a lifetime of beautiful coincidences, and I’m certain it will continue to evolve.

French Curves: TOTAL LOOK BLANC

It’s the 16th of the month, y’all!!! Pour yourselves a glass of Chardonnay, grab yourselves a tasty baguette, and sit back and enjoy another fab French Curves post — the outfit photo challenge with the French touch, created by the splendid Vanoue of The Curvy and Curly Closet!

The theme this month: TOTAL WHITE LOOK!!!

As per usual, an English translation will follow!

The Curvy and Curly Closet !

In last month’s challenge I wore a gorgeous white dress, not knowing what this month’s theme would be. So when this month’s theme was announced, I said, uh oh!

But then, a fashion miracle occurred!!! The GARNERSTYLE for Rebdolls capsule collection dropped, and all my worries just evaporated into thin air!

From the moment I laid eyes on these wide leg white pants, and off-the-shoulder crop top, I knew I had to have them!

Honestly, if I wasn’t already married, this outfit definitely could have been my wedding “dress!” That’s literally how much I love it.

In all seriousness though, Chastity Garner really knocked this collection outta the park! The nautical vibes, decadent silhouettes — she did that, and all I can say is, YASSSSS!!!

Today’s theme: BIKINI!!!

Last summer I wore my first bikini since my childhood. Since that day, I’ve promised myself to never be ashamed to wear one.

Here I am!!!

Weekend Essentials

Ok, so I’m not even gonna lie… I spend most of my weekends in pyjamas – not because I’m lazy, but because I can. And I’m cool with that.

But I do love a great outfit for those days when I have no choice but to get out and be productive! The perfect weekend ensemble has got to start with some great basics!

When it comes to effortlessly chic basics, it simply doesn’t get any better than these amazing leggings and this super cute, tank top from SexyPlus Clothing!

I always love breaking fashion “rules” so this combination of black and navy is really fun!

Paired with a cute white blazer from Torrid, some bold, gold jewelry, sunnies, and a great bag, this nautical look has a classic feel; and these fabulous, black patent flatforms from ASOS lend it an edgy twist!

I was definitely feeling myself in these great pieces… So much, in fact, that I may actually make an effort to get dressed again tomorrow!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, loves, I know I will (even if it just started raining here in Montreal)!!!

Seduce Me With Cupcakes

IMG_5672-1
So it was Valentine’s Day last weekend. I haven’t really done anything major to celebrate it over the past few years… Sure, there’s always a gift/chocolate/pink/red candy exchange, and I always get a little something for the kiddies… But this year, the hubby and I felt like, you know what!? We should do it big like we used to!!!

Aaaaand then we remembered that we’d rather just wear jeans and drink beer!!!

So, in lieu of a lavish evening of champagne & dancing, we shared a good meal, watched a Canadiens game at a resto-pub (we won too!) and spent a relaxing night at a hotel!

Sure, the place was packed, our room wasn’t ready when we arrived, and my husband somehow managed to cut both of his hands (seriously, both?) unloading our bags from the car (only this guy could be gushing blood within the first five minutes of our date), and sure, he may or may not have snapped at me for laughing at his ridiculous misfortune… But…

It hit me that day, how the things that make me happy have changed pretty dramatically over the past few years…

How, not too long ago, there wasn’t much that could have convinced me to “waste” a night away from the kids on anything other than dressing up, waiting in line in the snow, taking a few shots (a few too many, that is), and dancing the night away…

It also hit me, that it really doesn’t take much to please me anymore… I’m completely thrilled to throw on a super cute & comfy outfit, crack open a few brewskis, share a laugh, and cozy up to the man I love!

I don’t think I could have picked a more perfect piece to wear for our V Day date night than the absolute cutest, comfiest, and most perfectly fitting, “seduce me with cupcakes” tee from the UK based, Feminine Funk!

To compliment it, a gorgeous statement necklace from Addition Elle, and my good old, red satin blazer.

All that, paired with stunningly embellished Parasuco jeans from Addition Elle, my new, and super funky, black patent flatforms from ASOS, I was all set to spend some quality time with the mister!

So seduce me with cupcakes!!! No need for diamonds or pearls… Come at me with inexplicably bleeding hands and give me a foot rub! (Haha!) And woo me with confections… Because at the end of the day, it’s those little things – life’s simple pleasures (minus the blood) that are the sweetest ones of all!!!

French Curves: GRAOU

IMG_5521-0
As most of you probably know by now, I’m from Montreal, and I speak French!

Today, I’m celebrating my heritage and joining up with the French Curves collaboration!!! This is the monthly outfit photo challenge with the french touch, which takes place each 16th of the month, and was founded by the beautiful, and always so chic, Vanoue of The Curvy and Curly Closet.

But fear not, my Anglo loves! I’ve summarized it in English for you, because I wouldn’t want you to miss out!

The theme of this month’s challenge is GRAOU, or, as you’re probably more familiar with… RAWR!!!

I wear a lot of leopard print. Whether my outfit is super sexy, or conservative, a little leopard has the ability to lend a certain sense of animalism to anything it touches.

So I went with one of my favourite pieces – a pretty, black & red leopard print bomber from Addition Elle.

To have some fun with the theme, I paired it with an amazing snake print skirt, also from Addition Elle.

And because everyone knows that the secret lies in the details, the cherry on top of this animal print cake, is definitely an adorable leopard print necklace from Aldo, which compliments perfectly, the African bronze bracelet I’ve chosen to go with it!

Be sure to check out all the other gorgeous, plus size, Franco bloggers!

Et alors, sans attendre un moment de plus, ça me done beaucoup de plaisir de vous annoncer que je suis maintenant une participante dans le French Curves Challenge, créé par la belle, et toujours si chic, Vanoue, de The Curvy and Curly Closet !!!
