My Montréal + Fashion Week Score

Well, it was a success!!! Montréal + Fashion Week, which took place last weekend and brought diversity and visibility to the plus size scene in my amazing city, was an absolute honour to be a part of!

Although it was super scary, I managed face my fears and host alongside Emily Roy, the creator of the event, (without passing out) all while draped in the showstopping designs of Pheline Couture and Amadora JewelryWe showcased a fantastic selection of brands at the fashion show on Friday evening, ranging from active wear, evening wear, to bridal, and our models, including my boo, Sabrina Servance of Big Women Big Love, the beautiful Rosie Mercado, and Montreal’s own Joby Bach, along with an entire lineup of inspiring women, totally ripped the runway!!!

Saturday, after coming down from the euphoria of such a high energy event, I enjoyed day one of the Montréal + Fashion Week sale expo where one particular piece really caught my attention—this gorgeous hot pink leopard print dress from i.b.b.i. Collection!

It was more on the pricey side, but I tried it on and instantly fell in love! I knew I couldn’t leave without it.

The quality of this garment is beyond superior. Luxury plus size clothing lines are few and far between, but i.b.b.i. Collection is getting it right! It’s really exciting to see more high end options available to the plus size consumer, because for a very long time, our choices were extremely limited. There is a whole world of curvy women out there just waiting to drop some dollars on some luxury pieces and I love that there are companies like i.b.b.i. who are taking notice of this!

I was honestly really impressed by the whole line, and if my wallet had permitted it, I would have walked out with an armful of fabulous frocks; but I definitely went home with my favourite one of the bunch! As I was trying it on, already wearing a thick gold chain, Rosie Mercado, the face of i.b.b.i., pointed out how great it looked with the dress. Needless to say, when I rocked it out on day two of the sale expo, I wore it with my fave piece of bling, this extravagant, layered chain necklace from Ready To Stare, a designer whose jewelry seems to have been made to pair with leopard print!

These golden baubles and a simple pair of embellished, black leather flats from Aldo, and my look was complete!

Even Rosie approved!

I look forward to seeing which brands come out to play next year at Montréal + Fashion Week, and I am definitely looking forward to all the places I will wear my new dress!

A huge thank you to my bestie, Crystal, for snapping these awesome graffiti shots!

French Curves: THE STATEMENT NECKLACE

It’s the 16th of the month, and after being on a little break for a couple of months, I am once again ready to get back into the French Curves Challenge – an outfit photo challenge with the French touch, created by the stunning Vanoue, of The Curvy and Curly Closet!

If you don’t speak French, I’ve got you, boo! As always, an English translation will follow, just keep scrolling down!!!

Il est encore le 16 du mois, et après quelques mois de pause, je suis prêt à nouveau à participer au French Curves Challenge – la collaboration entre blogueuses francophones de taille plus avec la touche française, crée par la ravissante Vanoue, de The Curvy and Curly Closet !

Le thème ce mois-ci: THE STATEMENT NECKLACE

The theme this month: THE STATEMENT NECKLACE

A statement necklace has the power to complete any look.

When you wear one, it’s the first thing everyone sees when they look at your outfit, and as the name suggests, they send a very clear message that you’re fabulous, and I don’t care who knows it!!!

This necklace was hand made by Djénéba, an incredibly talented Malian woman who crafts gorgeous jewelry with materials purchased in her home country.

The meticulous craftsmanship of her jewelry is her greatest passion in life, and it’s very evident if you ever have the chance to visit her “cavern” filled to the gills with sparkling beads which she’s gathered, little by little, with each trip home to Mali to visit her family.

I let the necklace be the star of this outfit, and I paired it with a super simple, chic look, but with enough pizzazz to do it justice.

Simple black leggings, and my sheer, asymmetrical, leopard print tunic by Nadia Aboulhosn for Addition Elle are the perfect pieces to compliment this striking accessory!

And in true Nadia style, a pair of heels put the final touch on the look.

Be sure to check out the statement necklaces on all the other French Curvettes here, as well as on Facebook, and Instagram too!!! Also, remember to use the hashtags #FrenchCurvesOOTD and #FlightOfTheFatGirl on all your style pics!!!

Confident to the Maxi

I remember when I first really noticed a woman in a maxi dress. It was sometime during the mid 2000s, and she had “the perfect body” (or at least the body I hadn’t realized yet, wasn’t the only kind anyone thought was beautiful). I’m sure I had seen others before her, sashaying about in ankle-length dresses, but this girl just caught my attention. In my still unaccepting-of-my-own-body mind, she was everything I wished I could be. Slim, large-breasted, beautiful, and she seemed to almost float along in that long, flowy dress like nothing else mattered but her and the breeze that lifted her hem every now and again, to reveal her ultra chic gladiator sandals, and perfect pedicure…

She was noticeable, right down to her bohemian, beaded necklace, and bangles that slid all the way up her slender arms, to her elbows when she lifted her hand to brush the hair from her face.

I realize now, all these years later, that what I was so captivated by wasn’t this girl’s seemingly perfect silhouette, but rather, her confidence.

I never would have guessed then, that I could feel as good as she looked in that dress… I never could have imagined that her intoxicating vibe was something that I could have for my very own… But now I see it. Now, finally after all these years, I love my body, and when I step out the door in a gorgeous maxi dress, I know I look just as striking as she did. I know I walk with the same ease and carelessness as I remember her doing so well… And I know others see it too.

See, it’s not about having the perfect body. It’s not about having slim arms, or large breasts. None of those things will ever give you the intangible quality that I couldn’t quite pin down, until I experienced what self-love truly was for myself.

That woman felt beautiful, and that’s what drew me to her. I feel beautiful, and that’s what was shining through when I wore this stunning maxi from SexyPlus Clothing.

Once I stepped into it, I didn’t want to take it off, so I decided to take my look from day to night!

For daytime, I paired it with pretty, embellished sandals, sunnies, a straw hat, gold bangles (of course) and my Lilly Pulitzer for Target straw bag (my only score from the great Lilly for Target fiasco/triumph).

And for my evening look, I switched out my sandals, hat, and beach bag for a cute pair of cork wedges, a vintage clutch, a great necklace, and a fab black tuxedo style bolero from SexyPlus, and headed off for a date night with my hubby!

Maxi dresses are super versatile, and really transition well from day to evening. This particular one is so fun, because it combines animal print and paisley, for a really fun combination of wild and classic.

Just a little note, I actually sized down in this dress, as it is made very generously, but I would recommend ordering your usual size if you’re particularly boobalicious (which I’m not). I have very big hips, and as you can see, even when sizing down, the cut is roomy.

So, while I must admit, I still yearn for a set of bangles that can actually slide all the way up to my elbows (seriously, where can I get some of those?)… I feel pretty f*cking fabulous in this dress!!!

I can say with a huge degree of certainty, that if I had known then, back when I first saw that woman looking effortlessly cool in her maxi, that the greatest detail of her outfit was her confidence, my life would have gone a lot differently… But the important thing is that one fine day, I did learn her secret. I did start to love myself, and now, I can rock a maxi like nobodies business, and it feels glorious!!!

Because you’re all so amazing, please use, code FREEFLIGHT to get free shipping from SexyPlus from now till May 25th 2015! Don’t miss out! This dress is still available in this print, as well as in a couple of others!!!

French Curves: GRAOU

IMG_5521-0
As most of you probably know by now, I’m from Montreal, and I speak French!

Today, I’m celebrating my heritage and joining up with the French Curves collaboration!!! This is the monthly outfit photo challenge with the french touch, which takes place each 16th of the month, and was founded by the beautiful, and always so chic, Vanoue of The Curvy and Curly Closet.

But fear not, my Anglo loves! I’ve summarized it in English for you, because I wouldn’t want you to miss out!

The theme of this month’s challenge is GRAOU, or, as you’re probably more familiar with… RAWR!!!

I wear a lot of leopard print. Whether my outfit is super sexy, or conservative, a little leopard has the ability to lend a certain sense of animalism to anything it touches.

So I went with one of my favourite pieces – a pretty, black & red leopard print bomber from Addition Elle.

To have some fun with the theme, I paired it with an amazing snake print skirt, also from Addition Elle.

And because everyone knows that the secret lies in the details, the cherry on top of this animal print cake, is definitely an adorable leopard print necklace from Aldo, which compliments perfectly, the African bronze bracelet I’ve chosen to go with it!

Et alors, sans attendre un moment de plus, ça me done beaucoup de plaisir de vous annoncer que je suis maintenant une participante dans le French Curves Challenge, créé par la belle, et toujours si chic, Vanoue, de The Curvy and Curly Closet !!!

Don't Hate Me Because I'm Beautiful

IMG_5003.JPG
I’m a very friendly girl. I don’t throw shade. I’m a lover, not a fighter. I avoid confrontation like the plague. I respect even my adversaries, and I don’t seek revenge… But sometimes you need to show your haters how wrong they are.

What I mean to say is… Sometimes a b*tch just needs to get put in her place!!! Haha!

IMG_4999.JPG
And while I am non confrontational by nature, when someone starts thinking that they can hurt me, they need to know that I am laughing in their face!

IMG_5001-0.JPG
They need Screw that! SHE needs to know that she will never be better than me because she has an ugly soul, and while she’s talking karma, she’s the one who karma just came back to bite. 😘 (I almost never use Emojis in my posts, but girl, this one’s for you!)

So don’t hate me because I’m beautiful (yes YOU, I know you’re reading this). Love me, because you tried to be me and failed, and that must mean I’m pretty fantastic. 😋 (Oops, there I go again! Hahaaa!)

You need to love how hot I look in this fabulous midi dress from Zelie For She.

IMG_5117.JPG
Love how crazy dope I look in my earrings from Cristy Ellen K!

IMG_5119.JPG
Love how sexy I look in the the most absolutely amazing plus size anklets ever, from Ready to Stare! (No but seriously, I know you you’re a fat girl too, so you might wanna know… Just tryna help tho!)

IMG_5120.JPG
And love how, no matter how hard you tried to hurt me, no matter what you tried (yes b*tch, TRIED) to take from me, I stayed fresh AF and didn’t even smudge my mascara.

So ladies, don’t ever let anyone try and bring you down!!! Show them how much better you are!!! Rise above it at brush it off… But never be afraid to remind them how ugly their souls truly are, for that is the only way to help them. Let God take care of the karma!

In Haitian Creole we say ‘Wap konn Jòj cherie’ – you’ll get what’s coming to you! Actually, you just did. 😉 (Last one, I promise! Haha!)

Harem Pants For The Tummy Conscious

IMG_6258.JPG
So, I like to browse my blog’s search terms from time to time (okay, a lot).

For those of you who don’t know what these are, they are the terms that people type into their search engines which lead them to clicking on my blog, and you can believe me when I say that many if these terms are downright hilarious! I’ve seen search terms going from “fat nude white girl” all the way to “big black sexy naked beauty.”

Yup. Nudity is almost always in there somewhere; but the second most common search terms I see go something along the lines of “how to wear plus size harem pants.”

IMG_6300.JPG
I gather, from how often these search terms come up, that harem pants continue to be a coveted, yet intimidating style among the full figured community, and I totally understand. I was, at one time very much nervous about wearing them too.

See, and I know I’ve discussed this with you many times before, I have a serious case of the bum-tum (tummy that looks like a second butt in the front), and harem pants have proven to be a huge struggle to pull off (not literally off, that part is easy).

I wrote another post a while back (here) about with a tip on wearing a peplum top, or belt to help disguise your tummy. I still love this idea, but I’ve come up with another.

IMG_6277-0.JPG

IMG_6250.JPG
As you can see, I’ve paired the same harem pants (Forever 21+) from my other post, with this absolutely delicious blue, vintage style tee from Addition Elle; and instead of tucking it in and putting my belly on display, I’ve left it untucked, except for a small bit of it on one side. This way, you have nearly full tummy coverage while still showing off the signature high waist and pockets of the pants at the same time. It’s the best of both worlds!

Pair the ensemble with colourful flats and a bright handbag for a casual, chic, put together look that incorporates the on trend look of harem pants with the comfort of knowing you’re tummy is hidden.

I Am Woman, Hear Me "Rawr"

Yay! The big day has come!!! What day, you ask? Why, the day I finally get to wear the incredibly sexy “Tricia” dress from Monif C. of course!!!

I’ve been obsessing over this dress since it was first posted in January for pre-sale, and I haven’t stopped coveting it since. At first I had reservations. I loved it, but wasn’t sure how I felt about the idea of a crop top. I know they’re all the rage right now, and I think they look super sexy, but I couldn’t cease thinking – how is a dress with a crop top going to look on the tummy of a mum of four who’s covered in stretch marks?

So, I went back and forth on the idea for a little while and then finally decided – so what if I have stretch marks!? I’ve been working so hard to accept my body and love the skin I’m in; am really going to let the insecurities I have about my stretch marks stop me when I’ve already come so far!? They are the product of carrying each of my four children in my womb – four little humans who depended on me, and still do, to live. They remind me of the sacrifices that I’ve made for my family and of how, no matter what happens, I gave life to four beautiful beings who are, and always will be a part of me and who I love with a love that is stronger than any other force imaginable. To be ashamed of my stretch marks is to be ashamed of my four greatest accomplishments and nothing about that makes sense.

In a way, this dress and my desire for it, somehow managed to push me to face a fear, to let go of my inhibitions and accept just one more aspect about my body that I had been insecure about. I don’t know if it was the fierce turquoise and tan animal print or the bodycon style that Monif C. dresses do so well, but it made me realize that this tiger momma has earned her stripes and I’m not gonna hide them anymore!!!

Rawr!!!

The Animal Inside

Rawrrr

I don’t know how to tell you this, but, I think I’m addicted… To animal print!

I recently ordered a sassy new animal print dress from Monif C and a hot new pair of leggings from Forever 21+ and I still feel like I can’t get enough of it!

From the time I was a little girl, growing up in the 80’s & 90’s, animal print (often neon) was always considered a bold fashion statement. I always had somewhat of a fascination with it. It always felt like a very grownup print to me. It seemed as though only grown, powerful, beautiful women wore it, kind of like red lipstick or little black dresses.

What I was picking up on was real; and it’s funny because nobody had ever said it to me, I just drew the conclusion based on what I saw and how it made me feel and now I know why – animal print is sexual. It’s primal and carnal and raw; and although I didn’t yet have the understanding of such adult matters, I knew that animal print meant something way too grown up for me.

Needless to say, I guess my animal print fixation speaks a lot for how I like to be seen today – haha! But who doesn’t love feeling sexy!?!? We all need to feel desired, attractive and get in touch with our inner animal sometimes!  Rawrrrrr!!!

Rawr!!! Am I right? Haha…

This on trend, animal print, evening look is perfect for date night! These ultra chic leopard print 7/8 pants by Michel Studio certainly steal the show, and are paired stylishly with a solid black, cold shoulder top with gold detail, cognac colored, studded pleather jacket, black & gold leopard head skinny belt, double cross necklace and of course, red flats for a sassy splash of comfortable color. A perfect ensemble for dinner and a movie or for dancing the night away! My hubby DEFINITELY approves!!!
